Early in July I was invited to create a live painting in Vanier for MOZAIK Block Party hosted by the Boys and Girls Club Ottawa and presented by “What’s Good in the Hood”. It was a great space for youth and neighbours to gather in this block party transformed parking lot where there was a pay by donation barbecue, pop up skateboard park and basketball. The block party was brought to life with slam poetry, DJs and party beats.
The objective of this project was to allow teens and kids the chance to get creative and express themselves in a safe space. I created a colouring book style mural that allowed teens the chance to partake in the painting of the mural. I had the colour pallet decided ahead of time and the colours pre mixed. I encouraged teens who showed interest to pick up a brush and join in on the painting. Overall the kids had a lot of fun and were very curious about careers in the arts.
The finished mural was based on a Greek Mythology tale “ Jealous Star”
Jealous Star: according to Cherokee Legend the sun long ago grew jealous of the moon because the people of Earth always looked at her with twisted up faces and squinted eyes, while they smiled at his gentle light.
